The Impact of Vaccination as a Strategy to Combat Bacterial Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat, affecting healthcare outcomes like morbidity, mortality, and costs. Vaccination is a key strategy to counter AMR, promoting immune defenses and reducing the need for antimicrobials. A literature review analyzed 13 studies from 2005 to 2024, highlighting the significant role of vaccines in reducing antibiotic reliance, especially for vulnerable populations. The introduction of conjugate pneumococcal vaccines significantly decreased drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. The review also discusses the indirect benefits of widespread vaccination, including herd immunity and reduced transmission of resistant strains. Well-coordinated antimicrobial stewardship programs can mitigate resistant infections, optimize antimicrobial usage, and improve patient outcomes.
